Marina Aris NYC Authors Guild Ambassador hosting author marketing event

The final in-person New York City Authors Guild event before the COVID-19 lockdown felt more like an intimate meetup—a gathering for writers who missed the previous week’s session on author marketing.

During the evening, I shared some fresh, unconventional approaches to author and book marketing. Time and again, authors confide that marketing leaves them feeling overwhelmed, confused, and unsure of how to truly engage their readers.

At these NY Authors Guild events, I remind authors that marketing is simply another way to connect with readers who are already interested in their work. It’s far less stressful when you focus on genuine connection, rather than chasing likes or follows.

We also explored how to make the process enjoyable—by tapping into the inspiration behind their writing, authors uncover a wealth of stories and insights to share with their audience.

The best part? Attendees left with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for marketing. That was exactly the goal. When writers approach marketing with the same curiosity and wonder they bring to their craft, it transforms from a chore into a privilege—something they get to do, not just something they have to do.
